How do parental controls work on a Meta Quest?

The controls on a Meta Quest are strongest for a 10 to 13-year-old and weakest for a teenager, which is the opposite of what most parents expect. And at every age, voice chat inside other companies’ apps sits outside them entirely.

The Quest is Meta’s virtual-reality headset. Under 10, Meta does not allow an account at all.

From 10 to 13, the controls are substantial. A parent-managed account. Every purchase and download approved by the parent. Daily time limits and scheduled breaks. Social features off by default, which means no following, no chats or calls, no inviting people and no People tab.

From 13 that reverses. A parent can block apps and see a friends list of usernames. That is close to the whole of it. Meta offers no way to limit how long a teenager spends in the headset.

The gap that runs through every age. Individual games carry their own social features, including voice chat, and Meta’s controls do not reach into them. No parent sees who their child spoke to inside a game, or what was said. A headset locked down at the account level can still be a room full of strangers talking.

What this means for you right now

If your child is between 10 and 13, set it up properly now, while the controls still exist. Parent-managed account, purchase approval on, social features left off. The day they turn 13 the time limits disappear and you will not get them back.

If your child is already 13 or over, stop looking for a time limit. There is not one. What you have is the ability to block individual apps and see who their friends are, and the useful version of this is a conversation about which games they are in rather than a setting you can toggle.

At any age, ask which games they play with voice chat on. That is the part no control covers, and it is where anything that goes wrong is most likely to happen. A headset is a harder place to overhear than a living room television, which is the whole difficulty with it.

And check the headset is on their own account, not yours. A Quest set up under a parent’s account has adult permissions and none of the above applies.
