Roblox’s answer is a Kids account: all chat off, and only games rated Minimal or Mild. But this applies only if Roblox knows your child is eight.
Since June 2026, children aged 5 to 8 go on Roblox Kids accounts. All chat is off by default. A parent with a linked account can switch in-game chat on where Roblox allows it, after an age check.
What a Kids account can reach. Games labelled Minimal or Mild that have passed Roblox’s expanded safety reviews. That excludes games about sensitive issues, social hangouts and free-form drawing games, which between them account for a large share of what children actually ask to play. A linked parent can block or allow individual games, and can see what their child plays and who they are friends with.
The whole thing turns on the age Roblox has. It checks with a face scan that estimates age, or with ID. Until a child has been checked, Roblox uses the birthday they typed in. An eight-year-old who entered an older birthday gets the account for 9 to 15-year-olds, which reaches games rated up to Moderate, and the Kids protections never apply to them.
So the honest version is this. For an eight-year-old whose age Roblox has confirmed, and whose parent has linked an account, Roblox is more controlled than it has ever been. For an eight-year-old who typed 2012 into a box, nothing on this page is switched on.
What this means for you right now
Check which account type your child actually has, not which one they should have. It is in the account settings, and it decides whether anything on this page applies to your child. If it says anything other than Kids, the birthday is wrong or the age check has not happened.
Do the age check. It is the face scan or ID, and it is the step that converts a typed-in birthday into something Roblox will act on. Until it happens, every protection described here is theoretical.
Link your own account. Without it you cannot block individual games, cannot see who your child is friends with, and cannot turn chat on later if you decide to.
Then decide about chat separately and later. Chat off is the default for a reason, and switching it on is the single change that most alters what Roblox is for your child. It is a decision worth making on its own, not as part of a setup wizard at the end of a long afternoon.
