When a Smartwatch Disrupts Second Grade

Delaney Ruston, MD and Lisa Tabb, co-filmmakers of Screenagers movies have noticed an uptick in the number of children wearing smartwatches in schools and claiming them to be the new “disruption machine”.

As many schools around the world are legislating that schools should be phone-free, they are raising the alarm to say that schools should also be smartwatch-free too.

They are defining a distraction machine to be evaluated via one simple test : can it send or receive texts? If itcan, it does not belong on a child’s wrist during the school day. It should be stored away in a pouch, locker, or envelope just like a smartphone.
