UK’s New Child Safety Rules Set to Challenge Age Verification Process on X

The UK’s media regulator, Ofcom, is preparing to enforce new rules that could significantly change how Elon Musk’s X platform and others manage age checks and restrict access to adult and harmful content. While X says that it restricts this type of content to users who say they’re over 18, there aren’t additional checks that would prevent someone from misrepresenting their age.

Expected to be published Thursday, Ofcom’s final children’s safety guidelines aim to better shield under-18s from exposure to material such as pornography, self-harm, and suicide-related content. Under the updated standards, platforms will be required to introduce strong, effective age verification systems — with a deadline set for July.
