Meta Expands Teen Safety Measures to Facebook and Messenger
Meta has introduced ‘Teen Accounts’ on Facebook and Messenger, extending protections previously implemented on Instagram. Users under 16 will now require parental consent to livestream and to unblur images containing suspected nudity in direct messages. These accounts default to private settings, restrict messages from unknown users, and include features like screen time reminders and nighttime ‘quiet mode.’ The rollout begins in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, with plans for global expansion. While over 54 million teen accounts have been established since the program’s inception, some critics argue that these measures may not be sufficient to address all safety concerns.
