Recent scientific research continues to highlight the impact of screen time on mental health, including a new study from Finland published in Journal of American Medical Association just a few weeks ago.
This study found that total screen time, as well as computer and mobile device use (including smartphones and tablets), were linked to higher perceived stress levels—essentially, more screen time meant more stress. Additionally, both total screen time and mobile device use were associated with increased symptoms of depression.
Titled “Childhood Lifestyle Behaviors and Mental Health Symptoms in Adolescence,” the study reinforces what Dr. Stacey observes in her practice daily: excessive screen time and poor mental health often go hand in hand.
The real question is, how much more evidence do parents and schools need before taking meaningful action?
