Three approaches. Three different limitations.
This week: Understanding why, and what that means for your family.
The Pattern:
Each approach we’ve examined works in some ways and fails in others. Government bans eliminate access but require identity verification. Parental choice preserves privacy but only for engaged families. Platform regulation reduces specific harms but can’t solve displacement.
None of them are perfect, but that doesn’t mean they’re all equally imperfect. What matters is which tradeoffs you can live with.
What Social Media Needs to Function:
To work as a business, social platforms need data collection (personalisation requires knowing what you like, who you interact with, how long you stay), engagement optimisation (revenue depends on time spent on platform), scale (network effects mean platforms are only valuable when everyone else is there), and permanence (content persists because the platform is built on sharing and discovery).
What Childhood Development Needs:
Childhood development needs: privacy to make mistakes that disappear, protection from constant social comparison and performance pressure, mistakes that don’t follow you to 25, unstructured time that creates real boredom, unmonitored friendships that evolve naturally and the freedom to reinvent yourself.
The Fundamental Tension:
These two lists are in conflict. You can optimise one or the other, but you can’t fully preserve both. That’s why every solution has significant tradeoffs, not because we’re implementing them poorly, but because we’re trying to make incompatible things coexist.
What We’ve Actually Lost:
Before widespread social media, children had limitations like geographic constraints, limited information access and parental gatekeeping. However, they also had privacy from corporations and algorithms, mistakes that stayed local and temporary, genuine boredom that drove creativity, social development without permanent archives and the ability to become someone different.
We’ve traded one set of constraints for another. The old constraints limited access and the new constraints limit privacy. Neither is perfect, but understanding what we’ve traded helps clarify what we’re trying to protect.
Why Governments Are Intervening:
The EFF data tells the story: 90% of under-13s in the US on social media have parental permission, some because they feel pressured, some because they see benefits, some because they don’t understand the tradeoffs and there’ll be some that just don’t care.
Individual choice has demonstrably not protected children at scale and that’s why governments are stepping in. Not because individual action is impossible, but because relying on it leaves too many children exposed.
Why This Is Difficult:
The problem operates at multiple levels simultaneously: your child’s specific needs and your family values (individual level), network effects and peer pressure (social level), business models built on engagement (economic level), and balancing protection with privacy and free speech (political level).
A solution at one level often creates problems at another. Protecting individual children (parental opt-out) doesn’t address social pressure or vulnerable children. Addressing all children (government bans) creates privacy and political problems. Changing platforms (regulation) faces economic and competition problems.
What Parents Actually Face:
You’re not trying to solve social media as a societal problem. You’re trying to make decisions for your specific children.
If you restrict access completely:
- Your child has privacy and unmonitored development
- They could miss out on social connections their peers have
- They don’t develop digital literacy while young if not accessing any other digital content
- Other children remain exposed to everything you’re protecting yours from
If you allow access with controls:
- Your child participates in social connections
- They develop digital literacy under your guidance
- You’re still surrendering privacy to platforms
- Time still displaces other activities
If you wait for government solutions:
- All children eventually get some protection
- Surveillance infrastructure gets built
- Your child might be exposed while waiting
- One-size-fits-all approach may not fit your family
None of these are wrong. They’re just different tradeoffs.
What Do You Want to Preserve Most?
There is no “perfect solution” for a child. The platforms were never designed to be used by children and therefore expecting them to be able to use them safely is naive. Instead, if you do decide to allow your child to have social media, what do you want to preserve most for your child?
If it’s privacy and unmonitored development: Opt out completely and accept social limitations.
If it’s social connection and digital literacy: Allow access with strong boundaries and accept privacy tradeoffs.
If it’s simplicity and clear boundaries: Wait for government age limits and accept surveillance concerns.
All of these are legitimate priorities. They just lead to different choices.
What We Can Actually Change:
Individual families can:
- Delay access (even if not eliminating it)
- Set clear boundaries around time and usage
- Create phone-free zones (bedrooms, meals, homework time)
- Model the behaviour we want children to learn
- Talk honestly about what platforms require and what that costs
These won’t solve the structural problems, but they will protect your child in meaningful ways.
Communities can:
- Support families making different choices
- Reduce social pressure around platform participation
- Create non-screen alternatives for connection
- Share information about what different approaches actually involve
Governments can:
- Require transparency about data collection and algorithmic manipulation
- Mandate privacy-preserving age verification if implementing bans
- Focus regulation on harmful design rather than content
- Consider tiered requirements that don’t eliminate competition
Platforms can (and likely won’t without pressure):
- Offer chronological feeds as default
- Allow genuine account portability
- Limit data collection to what’s necessary for functionality
- Design for wellbeing rather than engagement maximisation
Being Honest About What’s Possible:
We can reduce harms, but we can’t eliminate tension between social media’s requirements and childhood development’s needs. We can protect individual children, but we can’t solve collective problems through individual action alone. We can regulate platforms to be less harmful, but we can’t regulate them to be harmless without fundamentally changing what they are.
These limitations don’t mean we’re powerless. They mean our power is bounded.
What This Series Has Shown:
Over four weeks, we’ve examined every major approach to protecting children from social media.
Government bans protect all children but require building surveillance infrastructure that persists beyond childhood.
Parental opt-out preserves privacy perfectly but only for your child, leaving vulnerable children exposed.
Platform regulation can reduce specific harms but can’t change the business model that requires engagement optimisation.
None of these are perfect. All involve real tradeoffs. Understanding what each approach actually costs helps you decide which imperfect solution fits your family best.
What You Can Do:
Decide what you want to preserve most. Not everything. Pick your priority—privacy, connection, or clear boundaries enforced by law. All are legitimate choices.
Accept the tradeoffs. Government bans mean surveillance. Parental opt-out means social limitations. Allowing access means privacy loss. That doesn’t make your choice wrong.
Protect your child anyway. Delay access even if not eliminating it. Set clear boundaries around time and usage. Create phone-free zones. Model the behaviour you want children to learn. Talk honestly about what platforms require and what that costs.
Be honest with your children. About what they’re trading when they use social media and why your family makes the choices you make.
Advocate for better. Push for transparency about data collection, privacy-preserving age verification, regulation focused on harmful design rather than content. Even while making imperfect choices, we can demand structural improvements.
And know this: Making any intentional choice is better than drifting into defaults.
We’re raising children in a world where connection requires surveillance, creativity requires engagement optimisation and privacy requires social limitations. These tensions won’t disappear through better parenting, better policy, or better platforms, not without fundamental changes we’re not yet willing to make.
But understanding those constraints helps us make better choices, even if they’re not perfect ones.
