X, Bluesky and Reddit in France’s crosshairs amid porn clampdown

French digital regulators, under President Macron’s leadership, are considering classifying platforms like X, Bluesky, and Reddit as pornographic, unless they roll out strong age-verification measures. This move, reported by Politico, would invoke new French rules targeting adult-content platforms, requiring apps to confirm users’ ages before granting access. Platforms failing to comply risk hefty fines, delisting from French search engines, or even a full ban.

It’s part of France’s larger agenda on youth protection alongside a potential under-15 social media ban, all triggered by shocking school acts of violence. While porn sites like Pornhub already face age-control regulations, applying the same logic to social media giants is more legally and technically complex. It raises questions over EU rules under the Digital Services Act, potential clashes with Brussels, risks to privacy (especially via digital IDs), and enforcement feasibility.

Bluesky and Mastodon federated platforms could be particularly exposed, as they operate via independent servers. Youth-minded users may turn to geo-VPNs or alternative networks. Yet France isn’t waiting for EU-wide solutions: regulators are already reviewing how to enforce the law. Failure could bring large-scale penalties, phasing France ahead in the global conversation on protecting minors online.
